Mermaid Elaine leads the way for Alzheimer’s cause

In aid of the West of Ireland Alzheimer’s Foundation, Elaine Mellett, manager of the Coast Club Leisure Centre with six others is set to undertake a swim across Galway Bay, from the shores of Ballyvaughan to the shores of Furbo — a distance of 13km, landing at the Connemara Coast Hotel on Sunday next August 29.

While the swimmers are crossing the bay, back at the Coast Club Leisure Centre ten runners and nine rowers will, in relays cover the distance by road from Ballyvaughan to Furbo (62km ) – the combined efforts dubbed a “Coastathon”.

The whole day will culminate with a BBQ for the participants, their sponsors and coast club members at the Connemara Coast Hotel and the festivities will include face painting, a magic show, bouncing castle, music and lots more fun activities.

All donations received will go directly to the West of Ireland Alzheimer’s Foundation which aims to provide a complete service of care to sufferers affected by dementia and their families in the western region of Ireland.

Each of the swimmers, runners, and rowers has been sponsored as also has the food, the entertainment and the facilities, including the boats and support personnel.
