Joint exhibition by talented Irish artists at GUH Arts Trust

THE GUH Arts Trust is very proud to present a joint exhibition by artists John Lee and Triona Mac Giolla Rí which opens at University Hospital Galway on Friday August 27th at 6.00pm. The exhibition will be officially launched by Dr Dom Colbert.

John Lee is an Irish born artist. Coming from a strong medical background, figurative painting was something very important to him. John says, “My paintings are in many ways classical and in some ways Kitsch in style, using the theory that the person is the indirect form of an icon. A singular figure is typical of my paintings, as is strong use of light from dark”.

John studied classical figurative drawing and classical animation in Dublin in the 1990s and worked for a number of years as a professional artist in the film industry in Ireland and Europe.

John’s Father, Dr Vivian Lee, was a major influence. As a psychiatrist and painter himself he gave John a great gift of understanding and appreciation for both painting and people. The most important influences for John are light, anatomy and presence.

Triona Mac Giolla Rí is a native of Galway and currently lives in Na Forbacha, in the Connemara Gaeltacht. She holds an Honours Degree in fine art painting from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (2009 ) and is a member of Artspace Studios. To date, Triona’s work has focused on the connective, in tangents that pull us from the collective and change our focus.

In this exhibition Triona will focus on the theme of waiting. The paintings explore ideas on whether waiting is a time to be endured or a time to be enjoyed. Using collage and oil paint on traditional gesso on board, Triona strives to render the tentative longings we feel for that which is genuine and true.

In the last year Triona has exhibited widely across Ireland and Europe. To view her work visit www.artspacegalway.com/artistdetail To see examples of John’s limited edition prints log on to www.sketchcan.ie

The exhibition is available to be viewed on the Arts Corridor, which is located just beyond the main foyer on the way to Out Patients, University Hospital Galway until October 1st.
