GALWAY’S CULTURE Night will take place throughout Galway city on Friday September 24th, 2010 when more than 30 cultural groups and organisations will come together to invite over 20,000 people to explore, experience and enjoy Galway’s unique cultural and creative vibrancy for a night of free artistic and cultural offering.
Culture Night is the country’s largest platform to showcase its rich cultural offerings and represents an extremely powerful and positive image of the vast contribution culture can make to our society. It celebrates the cultural and artistic landscape of Ireland and provides the public with opportunities to participate in free arts and cultural events throughout the country.
In Galway, this year’s Culture Night programme will feature theatre, talks, readings, film, music, dance, visual arts and literature. Some highlights of the programme include Tom Crean, Antarctic Explorer which will run at the Town Hall Theatre Galway from September 23 – 25. In a pre-performance talk, the enigmatic Aidan Dooley will also explore the growth and development of his hugely successful one-man theatre show.
Other notable highlights include a special return to the landmark event of the Synge Cycle in screening Riders to the Sea at the newly refurbished Druid Theatre on Druid Lane, while a special exhibition of seventy works by renowned painter and graphic artist Gertrude Degenhardt at Kenny’s Gallery, Liosbán will add some artistic flair to proceedings
Also taking part in Galway Culture Night will be Galway City Museum, Macnas, Galway Arts Centre, Galway Town Hall Theatre, Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Lorg Printmakers, Irish Film Board, Engage Arts Studios, Galway Music Residency – Con Tempo Quartet, Galway Early Music, Kenny’s Gallery, Art Essence, Galway Civic Trust, The White Room Gallery, Galway City Library, Black Box Theatre, St Nicholas’ Collegiate and Galway Youth Theatre.
