Galway’s promising athletes shine

Galway athletes enjoyed considerable success at recent events with the west’s talented youngsters taking centre stage.

At the recent Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Track and Field Championships, the most outstanding results came from the girls. Alanna Lally of GCH added the u-15 1500m title to the 800m she won at the beginning of July in a personal best time of 4mins 47 secs - six seconds faster than any time over the last five years, while clubmate Laura Ann Costello ran a brilliant 200m in the u-14 200m to come home a clear winner in 26.07 seconds. Maeve Curley of Craughwell AC set a new championship record of14.05 in the u-19 3k walk.

Craughwell AC’s Tomas Keehan won silver in the u-18 high jump and Cathriona Farrell taking silver in the u-19 long jump.  Athenry’s Sinead Touhy also won a bronze medal.

The relay events produced some super performances from the Galway teams.  

GCH's u-12 girls’ 4x100m won gold with a storming last leg from Emma Connolly, who was well supported by Sarah McDonnell, Roisin Flynn, and Cliona Ni Chochlain. Craughwell AC's Aidan Conneely, Damian O'Boyle, Gavin O'Toole, Kelvin Olayemi and Jamie Spellman took the u-14 4x100 gold.

Laura Ann Costello and Alanna Lally combined with Roisin Dobey, Sadbh Mooney and Katie Carter to win silver in the u-15 4x100m, while Georgina Healy, Deirdre Lally, Michelle Maher, Ruth O'Sullivan and Fiona O'Connor won gold in the u-17 4x300m.  The u-17 boys, Ronan Dobey, Ben Cooney, Sean Kyne and Darragh Whyte won silver, as did the 4x400m team, Shane Fahy, Kevin Dooley, Anthony Hebron and Sean Kyne. Amy Rohan and Tara Hession, who were part of the Galway ladies minor football team that won the All-Ireland, joined Emma Carter and Michelle Maher to take bronze in the u-18 4x300m, while the boys’ 4x400m team of Shane Maloney, Keith Fallon, Shane Fahy and Ronan Kelly won silver.  The u-19 boys picked up two medals. Alan Campbell, Ronan Coyle, Simon Callaghan and Ryan Harrington won bronze in the 4x100m, while Keith Fallon, Ryan Harrington, Alan Campbell, Roan Kelly and Ronan Coyle won silver in the 4x400m.
