Mutton Island lighthouse should be heritage attraction

Mutton Island lighthouse is a unique facility which should be open year round as a heritage attraction, that’s the view of Labour councillor Derek Nolan who has put the proposal on the agenda for next month’s City Development Plan meeting.

“With Heritage Week almost upon us, the evidence of Galway’s vast built and cultural heritage again becomes apparent. Mutton Island lighthouse is one example. There is great scope here for a permanent heritage and tourist attraction. Given its location in the bay and almost 200-year history, for most of which a family lived on site, it offers a unique insight into old Galway that is both interesting and valuable.

“Thanks to the good work of Galway Civic Trust and the City Council, extensive conservation works have already been carried out. I know the Civic Trust have made positive proposals in this regard and could be asked to manage the facility,” he said.

The Galway City councillor added that there were potential stumbling blocks to the project which include access via the Mutton Island Causeway.

“Access to the lighthouse, through the grounds of the Treatment Plant, will be a key issue that will have to be resolved. But I think that if the will is there, such an issue can be easily resolved,” he said.
