This year’s Galway Summer Rally 2010 will take place on Sunday August 29.
Sponsored by Mor Oil for a second year, it will once again count towards the overall Top Part West Coast Rally Championship, The Honda Cup Ireland, and the Galway Motor Club members’ championship.
Outlining event details at this year’s launch, clerk of the course Kieran Donohue said two features within this year’s event were the GRP4 Fabrications King of the Mk2 and a Mini Challenge which would be run in conjunction with Galway Mini Centre.
This year the organisers have secured a TV deal, with a team from On the Limits producing two 30-miute programmes to be broadcast at a later date. One programme will concentrate on the main rally and the second will focus on the GRP4 Fabrications King of the Mk2.. GRP4 Fabrications, which are based in Galway, are sponsoring the competition to help attract the best Mk2 drivers.
A new feature for 2010 will be a ceremonial start on Saturday at 8pm on Loughrea’s main street when the top 20 cars and the top local crews will cross the start ramp where the public can have a chance to see the cars and drivers up close before they head out on the stages on Sunday 29.
The rally format will be three special stages, each run three times with two visits to Loughrea Mart for service during the day.
Rally headquarters will be the Lough Rea Hotel and Spa, and rally programmes, which will have route details and times, will be on sale in local shops prior to the rally.
Donohue said safety was always a priority at any motorsport event, and this year’s message was “Keep the race in its place –drive safely”.
