Over €4,000 given to Chernobyl charity

There were smiles all round in Eyre Square as a cheque of over €4,000 was presented to the Sunflower Chernobyl Appeal and a number of children from Belarus.

Following admirable fundraising efforts Liam Codd of West Ireland Cyling and Ciaran Hayes, director of transport and infrastructure at Galway City Council, were proud to present the cheque totalling €4,075, to Pat Dillon of the Sunflower Chernobyl Appeal.

The charity, which is based in Ballinasloe, is a voluntary and registered charity which is dedicated to helping Chernobyl children who live in contaminated land destroyed by the nuclear disaster in 1986.

As part of Ireland’s National Bike Week in June of this year, staff at West Ireland Cycling teamed up with students from Salerno Secondary School to hold a fundraising event in Eyre Square which offered bicycles for hire and maintenance services, as well as smoothies made by machines powered by bicycles.

West Ireland Cycling, based in Upper Dominick Street, was set up by Liam Codd four years ago and caters for the various needs of cyclists by offering several different cycling tours and bicycle hire services.
