A fundraiser in aid of Martin Folan who has been working with the poor in St Vincent, West Indies, for the past two and a half years will take place at the Tertiary Hall, Claddagh Church, on Sunday next August 8 from 10am to 4pm.
The island of St Vincent, although situated in the Caribbean, is almost as poor as Haiti. Martin runs the De Porres Trust, which caters for the homeless, the marginalised, and those living in abject poverty.
The cake sale/bring and buy sale is being organised by Denise Dooley and friends. Ms Dooley is planning to spend a year supporting Mr Folan, and teaching and helping Sr Zita who runs an orphanage for children with aids.
During a visit in March of this year Ms Dooley saw at first hand the great work being done by the Trust and decided to contribute.
All money raised at the sale will go to the de Porres Trust and to the orphanage.
The organisers are seeking donations of homemade cakes, bread, and jams, as well as plants, groceries, and unwanted gifts. These may be left at the Tertiary Hall, Saturday August 7 between 2pm and 5pm and on Sunday from 9am. There will be an array of raffle prizes, bric-a-brac, and some designer items. Tea and coffee will also be available.
