Verge cutting policy is ‘madness’ — Canney

The decision to prioritise the cutting of verges on national primary routes over local roads is “absolute madness and a total waste of money”, according to Cllr Sean Canney.

Cllr Canney said the number of verges on the main roads which need to be cut for safety reasons is “negligible”, while some county roads are so overgrown that they are reduced in width and impassable in places.

“The money being spent cutting the verges on the main roads would be far better spent on the county roads where the expenditure would increase safety,” the Tuam county councillor said. “It is a prime example of daft decisions being made for cosmetic reasons to the detriment of safety on our roads. No wonder out country is in such a state when we continue to waste public money on our public highways.”
