Do not remove Magdalen Statue says Conneely

The Magdalen Statue on Forster Street could end up having to be removed, only a year after it was erected there, if a proposed new bus lane for the area goes ahead.

This is the view of Fine Gael councillor Pádraig Conneely, who unveiled the statue during his term as mayor last year. However he is worried that if the proposed bus lane goes ahead it could result in changes to the road layout which would mean removing the statue.

“If the statue is removed it might end up like Pádraic Ó Conaire and may never be re-erected in the city again,” he said, “and the mature trees will there will also have to be removed to make way for the bus lane.”
