A ‘Galway Mass’ will be held for the late Seamus Brennan, in St Patrick Church, Forster Street Galway this Saturday at 1pm.
Seamus Brennan, who died in July, was born in Salthill on February 16 1948. As a TD of 27 years and a holder of ministerial posts in six governments, he is seen as possibly the most successful Galway politician of all time.
After his studies in UCG and UCD, Mr Brennan worked as an accountant and management consultant, before becoming the youngest ever general secretary of Fianna Fáil from 1973 to 1980.
Mr Brennan became a Senator in 1977 and was first elected to the Dáil in 1981 for Dublin South, which he continued to represent until his passing.
Throughout his political career he served as Junior Minister at the Department of Industry (1987-89 ), Minister for Tourism (1989-92 ), Education (1992/3 ), and Junior Minister for Commerce (1993-94 ), Chief Whip and Junior Minister at the Department of Defence (1997-2002 ), Minister for Transport (2002-03 ), and Minister for Social Affairs (2004-2007 ).
Mr Brennan is survived by his wife Ann O’Shaughnessy, their two sons, and four daughters.
