GALWAY ALTERNATIVE/folk-rock duo Music For Dead Birds have released their new EP Black Tides Falling.
This four track EP opens strongly with the acoustic alternative rock of ‘Forever Wasted’. Donal Walsh’s busy drums competing with Jimmy Monaghan’s guitar riffs and impassioned vocals for attention.
The band’s folk-rock side comes out in ‘Character Studies’, with its dizzy, sprightly arpeggioed guitar figures.
Most impressive is third track ‘Esther Greenwood’. A slow, dark, and eerily haunting song, it reveals the influence of the Irish folk ballad (think Christy Moore, Andy Irvine ), something we have not heard in Jimmy’s music before.
Closing track, the noisy and directionless, ‘Glass Of Milk’ is the only disappointment here. Otherwise this is worth checking out and hints at some interesting ideas in progress from the pair.
