Claregalway could get temporary secondary school

Claregalway residents have taken their campaign to build a secondary school in the area directly to the Tánaiste and Minister for Education Mary Coughlan.

Claregalway residents met the Tánaiste this week and presented their case and she has promised to consider establishing a temporary school should the enrolment statistics demand such an initiative.

At the meeting the deputation presented projections, based on the population of 11 schools in the region, which showed that the area’s teenage population is set to grow, thus requiring a new secondary school.

The deputation also pointed out that there were capacity problems in schools in Oranmore, Athenry, and Galway city and they argued for the need for an early decision.

The Tánaiste has undertaken to have her officials carry out a study of the future education provisions for the area.

The deputation was organised by Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Frank Fahey. Minister Éamon Ó Cuív, TDs Noel Grealish and Pádraic McCormack, Senator Fidelma Healy Eames, as well as Pat Coen, principal of Claregalway primary school, Seán Duffy of the Galway County VEC, Michael Hannon, and Ronan Stanton also attended.
