Mayor calls for funds for Menlo pipeline

A new pipe for Menlo, to prevent a repeat of last winter’s flooding of the area, will cost €100,000 to install and the Mayor of Galway is calling for funds to be provided for the work.

On Tuesday the Galway City Council submitted a revised plan to the Office of Public Works to deal with the flooding which occurred in Menlo village during the winter.

The plan is to run a pipe down the middle of the road to the lake and let the water escape this way. The pipe will have to be buried 1.5m in to the ground and will be more than 300m in length.

Officials from the OPW and the city council met in Menlo recently and agreed that the OPW would determine the pumping requirements and the council would complete the preliminary design for the proposed pipeline and ancillary works. That route of the pipe has also been agreed.

The city council has estimated that the cost of the project is €100,000. The OPW will now have to assess this and make a decision on the granting of the required funds.

The Mayor of Galway Michael J Crowe said he will “be doing all I can” to progress the issue.

“I have put a lot of pressure on the relevant quarters to get this resolved and we have made progress,” he said. “Menlo is the only part of the city that was affected by the floods and if we can get the funding, this can be sorted out for the residents of the area.”
