Fana Burca residents interested in becoming involved in film, photography, and web based projects in their area are invited to a public talk with artist Michael Fortune tomorrow.
Mr Fortune will give his talk and explain the ideas behind the project he will be working on in the area in the Fana Burca community house at 7.30pm.
Following this presentation, people are invited to submit their names if they wish to be involved in any part of the project over the coming months. All ages are welcome to take part.
As part of a Galway City Council’s Per Cent for Art Programme, Wexford artist Michael Fortune will be working on a nine-month film and photography project in the Fana Burca estate. Entitled Project Seventeen, it will be based on ideas of home, family, community, and domesticity.
Starting at the end of October, the community house (aka No 17 ) will be transformed into a local cinema where six film screenings and talks will be presented for free to the people of the estate. To coincide with this, the artist will also provide equipment and workshops in filming, editing and web design to those who are interested from the estate.
Participation in the project is free and would suit those interested in art, film, photography, sport, folklore, local history, traditional music, nature, and community development. The artist will also supply new equipment which will be left in No 17 once the project is complete.
Michael will also produce a new body of photographs based on his experience in the estate. These photos will be produced into a limited edition publication to be launched in June 2009. A copy will be made available to every home in Fana Burca.
Michael received his MA in Scriptwriting from Dun Laoghaire School of Film, Dublin and BA in Fine Art from Limerick School of Art and Design. He has produced numerous public art and participatory projects which have been launched and screened at art spaces, village halls, ferry ports, and handball alleys.
Most recently he produced and screened a new body of video work entitled Departures and Arrivals, which was commissioned by Wexford County Council as part of its Per Cent for Art Programme.
