A man charged with possessing a replica handgun and a knuckle duster with the intention that they be used to intimidate or cause injury in the course of a robbery at a Mervue bookmakers has been remanded in custody with consent to bail.
David Hickey (35 ) with an address at 1D Pearse House, Pearse Street, Dublin 2, was brought in custody before Galway District Court on Monday.
Garda Conor Barrett gave evidence that Hickey had been arrested last Sunday, July 11, at 12.45pm and conveyed to Galway Garda Station where he was charged at 1.30pm with being in possession of a black replica handgun at Mervue with the intention that it be used to intimidate people in an attempted robbery at Mulhollands bookmakers, and being in possession of a silver knuckle duster with the intention of causing injury or to incapacitate a person in the case of a confrontation with others, contrary to Section 9 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.
The court heard that following arrest, charge, and caution Hickey had replied: “I regret my actions”. In reply to a second charge he said: “I’m trying to get help for my problems. I’m sorry”.
Inspector Aidan Foley said that there would be no objection to bail but requested that the court set an independent surety of €3,000, with one-third to be lodged, and that Hickey be remanded on his own bail of €100.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded Hickey in custody with consent to bail to appear at Harristown District Court tomorrow, July 16.
Conditions of bail included that Hickey have no contact with any witness, that he reside at the address furnished, and that he stay away from Emmet Avenue, Mervue. Legal aid was also granted.
