Major boost for Oranmore as Tesco announces 110 new jobs

Supermarket giant Tesco is to open a new store in Oranmore which will result in the creation of 110 jobs, it has been announced.

The new store will be much larger than the majority of Tesco stores in the country, and this will subsequently bring additional jobs to the area. The new store will be a major attraction in the soon to be opened Oranmore Town Centre. Construction is already well under way on the development, and it is anticipated it will open in December next.

The town centre development has been designed carefully so that it will appear like a natural extension of Oranmore town. The ambitious project will include the 50,000sq ft supermarket and an additional 20,000sq ft of ancillary retail units, which are due to be occupied by Evergreen Health Care, McInerney Sports, Arabica Coffee and Pisces Fish Emporium.

Tesco will also create more than 745 jobs nationally with the opening of additional new stores in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath, Swinford, Co Mayo and in Ballybeg, Co Waterford.

Trade Minister Batt O’Keefe says the investment will greatly enhance the prospects for growth and would boost the economic recovery. “Tesco is already a major employer in the country, with 13,400 workers, and this investment will build confidence in the private sector – confidence to lend, confidence to spend, confidence to invest and confidence to hire,” he said.

“The new jobs will generate local economic activity across the regions, as well as driving competition in the retail sector and offering convenience and choice to consumers.”
