Connemara man found dead in city died from natural causes

A 41-year-old man found unconscious with head injuries at the back of a hostel last Monday evening died from natural causes, a post mortem examination has revealed.

A spokesperson for Galway Garda Station confirmed that gardai are not treating the death of the man, identified as PJ Barry who was originally from Clifden, as suspicious following the results of a post mortem examination carried out yesterday by state pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

“The results show that he died from natural causes. Gardai are definitely not treating it as suspicious,” said the spokesperson, who added that gardai will now attempt to ascertain the exact circumstances of the death for the purposes of a possible future inquest.

Mr Barry had been living at the Fairgreen Hostel for many years. At around 11pm on Monday Mr Barry collapsed and was found unconscious at the back of the hostel by a passerby. Gardai preserved the scene where he was found and forensic examinations were carried out.

Mr Barry was brought to University Hospital Galway where he remained in a critical condition until he died from his head injuries on Tuesday afternoon.
