Galway city centre to become car free?

The centre of Galway could become a car free zone if the Department of Transport has its way.

Reports at the weekend suggest the Government is planning to introduce plans to stop motorists entering several of the country’s city centres.

The Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey is said to be ready to bring his Sustainable Travel and Transport Action Plan (STTAP ) to Cabinet in the coming weeks. The plan proposes making cycling and walking more attractive to commuters and if implemented will see Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway following the lead of Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Portland, Oregon in becoming cycle friendly cities.

The plan also proposes the exclusion of cars and trucks from parts of city centres during the day and parts of the city centre becoming pedestrian and cycle zones.

According to reports in the Sunday Times, the Minister wants to ensure 10 per cent of all future trips are by bicycle.
