Trent Keegan trial begins in Kenya

Two men have gone on trial in Kenya in connection with the murder of a Galway-based photographer in the country last May.

Trent Keegan's badly beaten body was found in a ditch in Nairobi on May 28.

The photojournalist had his laptop and cellphone taken during the attack.

The popular New Zealander had been working in Galway for the past three years and only travelled to Africa in February.

Muchiri Kariuki and Amos Kamau, who are in their 20s and 40s appeared in court, charged with murder and robbery with violence, an offence that also carries the death sentence in Kenya.

Trent Keegan was the winner of several awards from the Irish Professional Photographers Association and worked around the world in places such as Darfur, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and the slums of Mombasa.

The trial is expected to continue for more than a week.
