Calasanctius College in Oranmore has been granted planning permission for six new classrooms from the Galway County Council, which should be built and opened by September 2011.
The grant follows an allocation of funding from the Department of Education for new classrooms at the school. It also means that Calasanctius can meet current and future demand for all children in ‘Category 1’, which are children who attend local catchment schools and are from the area.
The news has been welcomed by Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish.
“Although these classrooms won’t be opened until next year,” he said, “Calasanctius has been able to cater for all children in Category 1 without the need to use prefabs, as it is working on the basis that the new classrooms will be open in 2011.”
In further good news for Co Galway schools this week, it was confirmed that the Minister for Education Mary Coughlan has approved emergency funding for St Vincent’s National School in Coolarne.
The works will involve replacing concrete barges, reinforcing a boundary wall, widening the school gates, and replacing gutters. The works will be carried out during the school summer break.
The news has been welcomed by Galway West TD Frank Fahey.
“Credit is due to the school authorities and the board of management who have pursued the project over the last number of months,” he said. “The Department of Education will be in contact with the school authorities to advise them how to proceed.”
