Super8 Shots to display the best of 8mm film making

SUPER8 SHOTS, the independent film festival celebrating 8mm film and film-making takes place in Galway throughout this weekend.

Super-8 was invented by Kodak in the 1960s and gave birth to millions of film makers, until the advent of video. There has been a resurgence of interest in Super-8 due to its cinematic look and its vivid colours.

The festival will screen a significant international selection of original 8mm works, film masterclasses, exhibition, live 8mm film installations, and comedy events.

This evening at 6pm, the Galway City Museum will host the Student Showcase, a collection of films from Galway VTOS students.

Then at 9pm at Kelly’s, Donal Dineen and Mr Weasel’s The Eyes Age, a Super 8 film installation involving film projector loops with live, improvised, music by Patrick Kelleher and Mr Weasel. Admission €10/8.

Tomorrow at 6pm Phil Evan’s The Scrum Tilly Lush, a film on skateboarding, will be shown in the Galway City Museum. At 10pm Bar 8 will present Superotica, an evening of vintage 8mm soft erotic films. Admission to both events is free.

At 8pm the museum will screen 8mm films by Julien Dorgere, Vivenne Dick, Donal Dineen, Moira Tierney, Mike Smalle, and Alan Crowley. Admission €10/8.

The Big Shots! Film Competition will be held in Kelly’s on Saturday at 7pm. This is an international 8mm short film competition which will be followed by DJ sets from Mike Smalle and Cyril Briscoe.

On Sunday at 6pm in Nimmo’s it is The Galway Wonder Years, an evening of film projections of life, people, and scenes of Galway in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

The festival will also host a number of masterclasses in NUI, Galway. An Introduction to Super 8 will be given by festival organiser Julien Dorgere; Processing Super 8 At Home will be given by Alan Crowley; and Super 8 Animation will be given by Bernard McCaffrey and Julien Dorgere. Admission to the classes is between €10 and 25.

There will be two exhibitions running throughout the festival. Chequerboard’s 8mm Sounds is an audio installation and download which can be seen in NUI, Galway from 2pm to 5.30pm up to Saturday. Cane 141’s Mike Smalle will display his photo portraits in Polaroid 69 at Bell, Book, and Candle.
