Holidays special — what to wear on a plane

With the holiday season under way, deciding what to wear on the plane is as important as deciding what to pack. Here are some simple tips to help with your decision.

The best way to dress for the plane journey is to be comfortable and presentable, no matter what the duration of the flight. You should always be somewhat dressed up as you never know who you are going to bump into.

Think about the fit of your clothing and the length of your flight. Choose an outfit that is not skintight and is made with a natural fibre such as cotton.

If you want to keep it very simple then you won’t go wrong with a long pants, sneakers, a smart top, and a jacket. Choose colours to introduce interest to your look. Comfort does not mean going for a tracksuit style, you can look elegant with a cropped denim and coloured pumps. Paco stocks a wide range of comfortable and classy pieces that are great for this type of occasion. I like this white and black top and cardigan, teamed with ultra comfy pants. The red neckpiece adds a nice finishing touch.

A dress is also an excellent style choice. Go for a high waisted style such as empire line; it will be much more comfortable than a waistband sitting on your waist. This maxi dress from Born is a great choice; team it with a cropped cardigan or cotton jacket and low heels and a neckpiece and bracelet. You can also wear a sleeveless top inside it for extra warmth. A knee length A-line style is also great for extra comfort. Bring a pair of tights in case it get a little chilly.

Separates skirts and tops are great as long as you choose a loose style on the skirt, such as an A-line, for comfort while looking your best. Layer with a lightweight top and jacket, and accessorise it with low heeled sandals, a scarf, and some jewellery.

Layering is a must when on the plane as you will be able to add or remove layers according to temperature fluctuations. Start with a comfortable T-shirt in a neutral colour with a nice jacket or cardigan, or a twinset.

I find scarves a must. Use a pashmina over your shoulders to keep you warm, or as a classy accessory to keep you in style. Bring a maxi bag to put all your belongings in. If you have hand luggage, I suggest bringing a little clutch or crossover bag and take it out of your luggage when you get on to the plane.

Tips for packing

• Plan in advance so you will know clearly what pieces are missing and what you must bring.

• Go for interchangeable matching pieces so you can create more combination with fewer pieces.

• Fashion essentials to pack are a sarong, which works well on the beach with a bikini and can be dressed up for after dark; a simple shift dress, which can transform from day to evening as it looks great when styled with a jacket or light-weight cardigan; lightweight boleros and shrugs; at least two dresses, whether they be fifties or A-line styles or jersey maxi dresses; a fabulous evening dress; a few tops (six would be enough ) or twin sets and trousers, and skirts.
