A 32-year-old shoplifter who targeted an Oranmore pharmacy three times in just one day, stealing nearly €450 worth of goods, has been fined €300.
Andiswa Nwafar with an address given at Lisbrook House, Headford Road, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday where she pleaded guilty to the theft of two Mitchum roll-on deodorants, two tea tree roll-on deodorants, two bio oils 125mls, three bio oils 200mls, two Palmolive bath aromatherapy, one Slendertone Full System, and one Slendertone accessory pack, total value €447.52, from Walsh’s Pharmacy, Orantown Centre, Oranmore, on August 17, 2009.
Inspector Ernie White told the court that the defendant, along with another woman, entered the pharmacy twice and stole various items. She then changed her clothes and came back to the same pharmacy for a third attempt. The court heard that not all of the property, which included an expensive Slentertone machine and accessory pack worth €279.89 alone, was recovered.
“It was three times in one day and she changed her clothes. This was not opportunistic, it was planned,” noted Judge Mary Fahy.
Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor said that her client, a native of South Africa, is an asylum seeker receiving €19 per week and she had never come to the attention of the Gardai before this incident. She added that Nwafar made a full statement and co-operated with gardai.
Judge Fahy convicted Nwafar and fined her €300 with four months to pay.
