City clubs lead challenge at Galway Regatta

Galway rowing clubs will do battle on the waters of the Corrib this weekend.

The 127th Galway Regatta begins with the first race at 8.45am on Sunday in what promises to be a full day’s competitive racing boasting some of the up-and-coming names in Irish rowing.

NUIG, Tribesmen, hosts Galway Rowing Club, Colaiste Iognaid, and St Joseph’s College (Bish ) have long been at the forefront of Irish rowing, and they will be hoping to keep that tradition alive on Sunday.

The Galway Regatta holds a special place in Galway history, once rivalling the Galway Races as the social event of the year. First based in the grounds Menlo Castle in 1884, for some years now the enclosure has been based in the NUIG grounds in Dangan.

The full calendar of events throughout the day will culminate at 6.15pm with the men’s senior eights.

Spectators can view the racing from the NUIG grounds at Dangan.
