A man accused of robbing and assaulting a group of men while wielding a potentially lethally pointed hammer has been remanded into further custody.
John Delaney (25 ) with an address at 3 Dunkellin Park, Craughwell, was brought before Galway District Court on Monday where Garda Brendan Dooher gave evidence of charging the accused with further offences.
The court heard that after arrest, charge, and caution Delaney replied: “I don’t understand these charges.” Delaney is charged with allegedly robbing a man of €20 cash and assaulting him at St Augustine Street on September 12, 2009. Delaney is also charged with robbing a second man, assaulting a third man, theft of €20 cash, and being in possession of an article, a hammer sharpened to a point for breaking glass, and intending to cause injury to a person either in a particular eventuality or to intimidate on the same date.
Inspector Ernie White told the court that a bench warrant had been issued on January 13 after Delaney failed to turn up to a court appearance, and it was executed in Birr, Co Offaly. He added that the DPP had consented to the charges proceeding on indictment.
Defence solicitor Adrian MacLynn made no application for bail but did request legal aid which was granted.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded Delaney into custody to appear at Harristown District Court tomorrow, June 18, for service of the book of evidence.
