Economist’s report praises local supermarket chain

A newly published economist report from Jim Power on the economic and financial significance of local retailers has praised the Galway-based Joyce supermarket chain for “epitomising all that is good” in the Irish retail sector.

The family-owned business, which has been in operation for almost 60 years, was commended for the support of local and national brands, and their commitment and dedication to supporting local suppliers.

The 34 page report states: “Personal service is very evident. There is a long established customer base that is supported by personal service, personal relationships, quality, convenience and value for money.”

Pat Joyce senior originally established a grocery in Headford in 1951. When he died in 1988 his son Pat took over the business and he has since expanded the venture to what the report calls “three top class stores” in Headford, Athenry and Knocknacarra.

Joyce supermarkets have been of huge benefit to the communities and region that they have served throughout the years and they provide 230 jobs to the wider community. They also sponsor local hurling, an underage hurling tournament, drama and musicals.
