Condition of crash victim“comfortable”

One person who had initially been in a critical condition in hospital following a collision in the Knocknacarra area last week has been described as “comfortable”.

A man and woman were rushed to University Hospital Galway (UHG ) after two cars collided at around 7am last Thursday. The crash occurred at the busy junction of Kingston and Barna Road, near to Joyce’s Supermarket. By Friday, an HSE West spokesperson confirmed that one person had been released from hospital while the other, who had been critical, was now in a “comfortable condition”.

Local gardaí were immediately called to the scene. They then blocked off that section of the road and diverted heavy rush-hour traffic to alternative routes for up to three hours.

Although necessary this caused havoc with the main routes out of Knocknacarra into the city centre. Hour-long tail backs occurred as traffic was redirected from the affected junction towards the Salthill route and therefore hitting traffic coming from Barna direction. There were some potentially dangerous manoeuvres taken by more adventurous and time-pressured motorists who cut through Joyce’s Supermarket car park towards Clybaun Road which caused even more congestion problems. This resulted in an hour-long journey for many motorists travelling from Knocknacarra into the city centre.
