University Hospital Galway (UHG ) had the second highest number of cases of the superbug MRSA in the first six months of this year, according to figures released last week by the national Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC ).
The news comes as it was also announced that NUI Galway will be joining a €5 million initiative which will use nanotechnology to combat the spread of germs such as MRSA in hospitals worldwide.
The HPSC figures showed that out of a total 240 cases of MRSA reported in the first six months of 2008 Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital reported 25 cases, which is the largest number recorded by a single hospital. Galway reported 23 cases and 22 cases were reported by St James’s Hospital Dublin.
