A year on, family remain devastated by Manuela murder

Murdered Swiss teen’s aunt rules out family return to Galway

A year on from the death of Manuela Riedo the family of the murdered Swiss teen have revealed they will never return to the scene of the crime.

This week sees the one year anniversary of the murder of 17-year-old Manuela Riedo, and with the trial due for next March, the Swiss teen’s family remain utterly distraught, as they try to come to terms with the tragic death.

The teenager’s body was discovered on wasteground near Renmore on October 8 last year in a crime that shook both Galway and the entire country.

In an interview over the weekend, the aunt of the murdered Swiss teen, Maya Boschung, revealed that the family will attend the trial, but would find it too hard to come back to the city where their daughter was murdered.

She said, “It’s too hard to even think about going to Galway. There are no words to describe how we feel.

“I will return to Ireland with Manuela’s parents but we will stay in Dublin, not Renmore.”

Maya added that the one year anniversary will prove particularly painful for the family. “Now especially is a difficult time. It is the one year anniversary of Manuela’s death, but it is also not long until her Birthday on November 5.”

Back in January Arlette (49 ) and Hans Peter (51 ), Manuela’s parents travelled to Galway to lay roses on the grassy path where the body of Manuela was found. They will travel to Ireland for the trial but are struggling to rebuild their lives.

Maya said, “Her parents think about her every day, we all do, and when I go to my sister’s house it is like Manuela is there.

“There are pictures of her everywhere and her room is exactly as it was when she left.

“For my sister and her husband Manuela is not gone. She was their only child and now they have no one.”

A commemorative Mass will be held in St Patrick’s Church in Galway this Wednesday, while there will be a Mass in the Swiss capital Bern, on Saturday.
