County hurling championship resumes

County manager John McIntyre will be hoping none of his players are injured this weekend with a full round of club championship matches down for decision in the Cooper Leisure County Hurling Championship.

Already without Fergal Moore for the championship, the Galway management team will not want any other long-term injuries.

Sarfields, who are unbeaten in Group A, face last year’s defeated finalists Loughrea at 2pm in Athenry on Sunday. The Sars have been motoring well and have hit 1-51 in their three games to date. The town has beaten Athenry 1-18 to 0-15, but went down to Kiltormer the last day out.

Elsewhere in Group A, Athenry, who are pointless from two games, face Craughwell on Saturday at 6pm in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe.

In group B, Gort, who have four points from two games, face St Thomas in Athenry at 3.30pm. And in the other game in that group, Turloughmore take on Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry at 4.30pm in Athenry.

Both those sides have yet to collect any points and they badly need a victory to avoid getting into relegation difficulty.

In Group C, Liam Mellows face Ardrahan on Saturday in Athenry at 6pm, while pointless Carnmore meet Mullagh in Loughrea at 6pm on Saturday. Mullagh will be expected to win this one as Carnmore have not been playing well.

As expected, in Group D Portuma are the team to beat. This Sunday they take on Kinvara in Loughrea at 6.30pm, while the other tie, in Ballinasloe on Saturday at 4.30pm, sees Killimordaly face Clarinbridge who have no points on the board.
