The new west of Ireland chapter of Democrats Abroad will meet on Saturday, May 29, at 2.30pm in Flannerys Hotel, Dublin Road, Galway.
This is the second get together of the chapter, which is open to any people holding US citizenship, whether they were born in Ireland or America, including the adult children of Americans born abroad. All have the right to vote from the state of last residence or the state of their parents' last residence.
Welcoming the formation of the new west of Ireland chapter, which was formally approved in April, Dennis Desmond, chairman of Democrats Abroad Ireland, said;“We are pleased to announce the formation of the west of Ireland chapter -- our first group to be based outside of Dublin. Upon holding our first ever meeting in Galway this past February, we were greeted by an enthusiastic group of Democrats who are ready and willing to get to work to help solidify our congressional majorities.
"At our AGM, we changed our bylaws to include language about chapters and immediately voted to formally recognise the West of Ireland chapter. We are delighted that Democrats Abroad Ireland will be seen as more than a Dublin group."
Two Bostonians are spearheading the effort to mobilise Americans living in the west to register and vote: former Irish Times journalist Sheila Sullivan, who lives in Achill, and NUI Galway law lecturer Larry Donnelly, nephew of former Massachusetts congressman Brian Donnelly, who sponsored the Donnelly visas which allowed thousands of Irish people to work in America.
Refreshments including tea, coffee and sandwiches will be provided.
