The start of construction this week by the ESB on a new 110kV station at Seamus Quirke Road in Galway is a welcome development for the region, according to IBEC regional director John Brennan.
“At present Galway city and Connemara are reliant on supply from a 110kV station located in Ballybane,” Mr Brennan said. “The new station on the west of the city will significantly enhance Galway’s energy capacity and security of supply.”
The project will cost in the region of €34 million and will take two years to complete.
“I think it is important to note that other similar size cities already have this level of infrastructure in place,” Mr Brennan added. “This is the west playing catch up again. Given the current economic climate, if it is necessary to reprioritise elements of the National Development Plan, it is imperative that the economic and social development of the regions remains a national strategic priority.”
