Urgent improvement works are needed at the stretch of the Ballymoneen Road adjacent to the Western Distributor Road as it “poses a serious threat” to the safety of local residents.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Frank Fahey, who has written to the city manager Joe MacGrath, asking him to prioritise road widening and the installation of a footpath on the road. The stretch of road in question is about 100 metres in length.
“This is a very busy road yet local residents have to traverse the dangerous route to reach the bus stop on the Western Distributor Road,” said Dep Fahey. “It is not acceptable for residents to have to take their lives in their own hands each time they make their way to the bus stop.
“It is not right that incidents have to happen for road works to be prioritised, we saw the consequences that can result from a lack of action at Cregmore a few weeks ago – and no one wants a repeat of that.”
In Dep Fahey’s letter to the city manager, he said that if any issues blocking the land acquisition arise, then City Hall should consider erecting a footpath in the interim while the land acquisition issues is being resolved. Dep Fahey said if funding is an issue he will work with the council to secure that as well.
“We need action on this now,” he said. “This is a serious matter of public health and safety and it must be addressed as a matter of urgency.”
