Galway Technical Institute will this evening host the much anticipated student art and design exhibition which will commence at 7pm.
Students of the art and design courses will display their paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture, garments and interior design portfolios.
The exhibition will showcase the creativity, talent, and innovative ideas that the GTI students possess. The work included in the exhibition will come from students completing courses in disciplines such as portfolio preparation, advanced certificate in drawing and visual inquiry, advanced certificate in furniture making and design, fashion design, advanced certificate in fashion industry, industry practice and interior design.
Galway Technical Institute provides quality and high standards in the area of further education. The institute offers a total of 44 full-time post Leaving Certificate courses leading to FETAC Level 5 and Level 6 awards. Certification is also provided by ITEC, CIBTAC, Department of Education, Junior & Senior Trades, City & Guilds, FAI and Apple. Tuition is free and students may qualify for maintenance grants. There are six main areas of study on offer at GTI from health care and beauty to business courses as well as art and design, media, computing and engineering and sport and leisure.
The art portfolio preparation course provides students with an indepth visual education and exploration. It gives students a strong foundation for further study at third level in a variety of media outlets such as art, design, graphic communication, craft, architecture and industrial design. A wide range of disciplines are covered including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design, art history and communications.
Students are introduced to the language, media and processes of art and design. With tutorial guidance they select the area of specialisation they wish to follow in their future careers. GTI now also offers an advanced certificate in drawing and visual inquiry. Drawing as a means of inquiry is essential for artists and designers as a research and exploratory tool. This course is designed to develop these skills at an advanced level.
The advanced certificate in the furniture making and design course is designed to prepare students for career opportunities in the furniture industry in design, retail and manufacturing. The courses cover such areas as woodcraft, woodturning, woodcarving, inlay and marquetry, upholstery and restoration. The advanced certificate allows students to develop, enhance and build on skills attained at Level 5.
Likewise the interior design course aims to develop and enhance the student’s innate style and ability. The course provides students with the opportunity to prepare a professional portfolio for presentation to prospective employers or clients. Modules include colour and light, drawing, interior draughtsmanship, art and craft appreciation, combined materials and work experience in an area relative to the course.
GTI fashion studio caters for students in fashion design and fashion industry practice. The recent Fashion Fiesta was the brainchild of the students on these courses and on the Business Fashion, Retail, Styling and Display course.
The exhibition will be launched by James Harold, Galway city arts officer tonight at GTI, Thursday 20th at 7pm and will be open to the public on May 21, 22, 24 and 25 from 10am to 4pm daily. This is a must see exhibition for anyone interested in viewing the work of our future designers in fashion, interiors, furniture as well as talented emerging artists.
Enrolment is now taking place for all courses commencing in September 2010.
