Scots-Canadian rock party at Kelly’s

THE SCOTTISH Highland regiments won Canada for the British at the Battle of Quebec in 1759 and over the centuries Scots have emigrated to and made a new home in the Maple Leaf nation.

The Scots brought their music, language, passtimes, and culinary traditions with them and all that has fed into the sound and moniker of Toronto Celtic rock band Enter The Haggis.

Enter The Haggis - Trevor Lewington, Brian Buchanan, Craig Downie, Mark Abraham, and James Campbell - play Kelly’s Bar, Bridge Street, on Saturday May 29 at 8.30pm.

The band was formed in the early noughties in Toronto and have released three albums. Their profile has risen to the point where they headline festivals, appear on TV, and see their music reach the Billboard and iTunes charts.

Their style of rock draws heavily on Scottish and Irish folk and traditional music with the occasional African-inspired drumbeat. “We like to experiment musically, pushing the boundaries of what people think of as Celtic music,” says Lewington. “Some of our grooves, melodies, and lyrics are quite different from other bands that we play with.”

The gig in Kelly’s will be the last final point on the band’s current tour and it’s set to be one hell of a night. One of the band members will be celebrating his 30th birthday and he’ll be bringing a few friends with him.

Call down and wish him a “Co’latha breith sona dhuibh! and enjoy the music. Admission is €10.
