Galway sports star Dora Gorman from Salthill has been announced the winner of the Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Month for April. The Irish u-17 football captain led her team to the semi-final of the European Championships last month - the first time an Irish women's team has qualified for a major final.
Gorman’s performance in all six qualifying games was described by team manager Noel King as “immense”.
Speaking about the team’s achievement, Gorman says: “We are all delighted to have qualified for the semi-final of the championship. There will definitely be a lot of preparation over the next few weeks, but it’s a really great opportunity for us all.”
“I’m delighted to receive this award. I train with the Salthill Devon team one night a week and the Irish team gets together about twice a month. It’s brilliant and I love every minute of it,” says Gorman.
The 17-years-old also plays Gaelic football with the Galway team, as well as playing hockey with Greenfields, Connacht and Ireland at underage level. She has also been shortlisted as one of four nominees for the u-18 Hockey Player of the Year award.
The Irish football team will travel to Nyon in Switzerland at the end of June where they will face Germany, the top team in Europe, in the UEFA Championship semi-final.
