Salthill needs to look its best for next month’s Round Ireland Off Shore Power Boat Race, so the Galway City Council must put in measures to keep the streets clean the bins emptied regularly.
This is the view of Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh who raised concerns over littering and litter management in Salthill at Monday’s city council meeting.
At the meeting councillors granted an event licence to enable the Round Ireland Off Shore Power Boat Race take place from June 5 to 12.
Galway Port will be the HQ for the event and there will be many sailing events taking place off Salthill during that time. It is expected that as many as 130,000 visitors will be coming to the city for the race and councillors called on City Hall to have all the necessary facilities in place and in good working order, such as public toilets.
Cllr Walsh said the powerboat race was a real opportunity for business in Salthill to capitalise on the influx of tourists, as well as an opportunity to showcase the area.
However he said that last Sunday night he noticed the bins were packed and overflowing to such an extent that people had little option but to leave litter on top of the bins. Any rubbish that people tried to place in the bins either fell out or forced out other items onto the pavement.
“The litter was deplorable,” he said. “The Galway City Council must make sure there are adequate street cleaning measures in place. Salthill needs to look its best, especially as the race is coming soon. It’s important for Salthill businesses and Salthill people
