Africa Day falls Tuesday May 25 and to celebrate African people and culture, there will be an exciting programme of sports, music, film, and educational events taking place in Galway city.
The Inaugural Spirit of Africa Day Schools Soccer Cup takes place at Mervue United AFC grounds on Friday May 21 from 10am with various Galway national schools competing.
Pupils will aim to win the five-a-side trophy representing their chosen African nation team. The tournament is supported by the FAI intercultural programme community development, Irish Aid, Galway City Sports Partnership, Bus Éireann, Coca Cola, Supermac’s, and Powersoccer School of excellence.
Galway’s annual African Film Festival will take place on Monday May 24 and Tuesday 25 in the Town Hall Theatre. The festival will be launched today at 5.30pm in the Town Hall by the Nigerian actor and scriptwriter Adedotun Adekeye.
This year’s festival includes a horror movie from Nigeria, animation from Zimbabwe, and a film about soccer in Chad. The festival is the result of a joint projectby the Galway One World Centre, Galway Film Society, and the Huston School of Film & Digital Media.

Fans of African music can look forward to a concert in The Quays Bar on Tuesday 25 from 9pm featuring Neil Sparkes (Transglobal Underground, Bougarabou, and Temple Of Sound ); Galway/African calypso band Toluking, who will launch their new album Story Story; reggae singer Dread; hip hop poets Lucky and Crew; and Afro-Latin band Bombanova.
The night will also see a fashion show, a performance by a cultural dance group, and DJ sets from Zenzo and Andreas. Proceeds from the night will go towards the Cystic Fibrosis Galway Hospital fund.
The event are being organised by Spirit of Voice Productions, the Galway One World Centre, and Galway Africans.
