Gardaí have launched a hunt for two men who held a woman captive yesterday morning while they ransacked her home.
The pair broke into a house in Cul Ard, Wellpark, at about 8.30am yesterday (Wednesday ), and when the woman who lived there disturbed the burglars, they forced her into a back room and continued to search the house for valuables.
The men stayed at the house for over an hour, stealing a sum of money and a small amount of jewellery. The raiders are believed to have left the house at around 9.45am through the front door. The woman was then able to free herself and alerted gardaí.
One of the men was of a stocky build while the other was described as skinny. They were both dressed in black and wore balaclavas and gloves. They appeared dishevelled and both spoke with southern accents. When they left it is believed they were carrying a light coloured box.
The woman, who is in her fifties, is understood to have been traumatised by her ordeal.
Gardaí have set up an incident room to investigate this crime and are appealing to witnesses to come forward. Anyone who was in the area of Wellpark yesterday morning and who saw these two men, or who noticed unusual activity in the area, is asked to contact Galway Garda station at (091 ) 538000.
