DARREN EMERSON, one third of dance/techno legends Underworld, will be DJing at Kelly’s Bar, Bridge Street, on Friday May 21 at 10pm.
Darren Emerson bought his first set of decks at 14 and began DJing in Essex clubs two years later. His first gig was at a club called Outers in Southend, playing Chicago and Balearic house, soon gaining recognition by being named as DJ of the month in both Face and I-D magazines.
When he was still only 18, a friend introduced him to Rick Smith and Karl Hyde, who were looking for a DJ/producer for their new band. Darren joined and Underworld were formed.
With Underworld, Darren and friends released three albums - Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest In The Infant, and Beaucoup Fish - and enjoyed massive success with the single ‘Born Slippy’, which featured on the Trainspotting soundtrack and summed up the laddish, loutish, culture of the late 1990s.
In 2000 Darren went solo and his first collaboration with DJ Sasha produce the Ibiza classic ‘Scorchio’. He compiled the Global Underground compilations Uruguay and Singapore and did remixes for Fat Boy Slim, The Prodigy, Puff Daddy, Meeker, and Gus Gus.
In 2003 Darren’s Underwater label was voted label of the year by DJ Magazine. Darren continued his hugely successful Underwater residency at London’s The End, until 2009. In February 2009, Darren released his third Global Underground mix CD, Bogota, while continuing his unrelenting schedule of DJing around the globe.
This is the second of the Dublin 515 clubnight monthly residencies in Kelly’s. Tickets are €15 and support is from Conor G. See www.darrenemerson.com
