Government accused of breaking EU law

The Government has been accused of breaking European law by applying vehicle registration tax to cars imported from Britain and Northern Ireland.

John Doherty, chairman of the Donegal branch of the Irish Drivers’ Assocaiation, says motorists should be allowed to trade freely across the border.

Dohery has started up a petition which he plans to hand to the Government.

The moves come at a time when a new Facebook page entitled “Ban VRT Now” has been set up and has already attracted 1,600 signatures.

The page was set up in the wake of a crackdown on Donegal motorists driving imported Northern Ireland registered cars.
