Mervue break the winning duck

Mervue United’s first win of the season in the Airtricity League First Division finally arrived on Friday with a 3-2 result away to Finn Harps in Ballybofey.

Two goals inside the opening five minutes put Mervue on the road to victory as they never allowed the home side draw to level despite conceding twice.

Manager Tom French was “delighted” with the result on Friday and especially picking up the three points.

“Our previous game against Monaghan was also a good point for us after going down to 10 men after 63 minutes. We had an excellent start against Finn Harps on Friday, going two up after six minutes. When they got one back just after half time we were on the edge a bit. The lads worked their socks off to keep us in front and thankfully Rory Gaffney got a third for us on 90 minutes,” French said.

“When they got one back after a minute there were a few tense moments as I was dreading another repeat of the Salthill game in which they equalised with the last kick of the match. It was a real team performance with Rory Gaffney leading the line up front and netting two excellent goals for us. Dan Cunningham had an excellent game for us at left back and Barry Mc Entee was drafted back to right back and like himself Tommy Walsh hasn’t looked out of place since getting into the team three games ago.”

However French is not getting carried away.

“We know we still have a lot of work to do to get ourselves back up the table. The result has been a while coming, but it was only a matter of time after our recent performances. Unfortunately for us it has taken to the last game of the first round of matches to get our first three points. This is what we needed to get us moving up the table. Our performances have being good over the first part of the season and we feel we should have more points on the board. If we keep improving as we have being doing it is only a matter of time till we move up."

Friday night sees another tough game away to Limerick. Limerick picked up their fourth win in five games following their recent victory over Athlone, and are now in fourth place in the league.

“It will be a tough task to come away with something, but after our last meeting with Limerick and our recent performances, we are confident of getting something out of the game. We earned a point at home last meeting and will be hoping to go one better this time.”
