Traffic congestion is making it hard for Rahoon Road residents to exit and enter their estates, so allowing another new entrance/exit onto the road at Millar’s Lane would be dangerous.
This is the view of Independent councillor Catherine Connolly, who has submitted a formal observation to An Bord Pleanála against the proposed development at Millar’s Lane, Rahoon.
Cllr Connolly is supporting the local residents on this issue as she believes the proposed development is “against both the letter and the spirit of the Galway City Development Plan”.
In March, the Galway City Council granted planning permission for the demolition of one house and its replacement by two separate blocks of mixed development.
Block A will be a three storey building consisting of four commercial units on the ground floor with four apartments above and block B will be a two storey building consisting of apartments. There will be car parking spaces and a new site entrance onto the Rahoon Road.
Cllr Connolly has concerns about the size, bulk, and design of the proposed development, as well as concerns in relation to the new site entrance onto the Rahoon Road.
“Residents are currently finding it very difficult to exit and enter their estates because of traffic congestion,” she said. “To allow another new site entrance/exit from and on to the Rahoon Road in these circumstances would not be good planning and would also be dangerous.”
Cllr Connolly said the proposed development will impact on Millar’s Lane itself which is a protected amenity under the Galway City Development Plan. There is also a short term objective to develop and upgrade the actual Millar’s Lane itself for passive amenity.
