Cannonball Run stopover confirmed for this year’s Clarenbridge Oyster Festival

This year’s Clarenbridge Oyster Festival was launched officially in the village last weekend when it was announced that the festival will be an official stopover for the annual cross-country drive, the Cannonball Run.

The run is held annually in aid of the Barrettstown charity set up and endorsed by the late actor Paul Newman.

The 2010 Clarenbridge Oyster Festival takes place from September 10-12. Last years’ sell out success ensures the celebration of the Clarenbridge oyster with a weekend of excellent entertainment and fine local foods in the festival marquee.

The official opening of the festival commences on Friday September 10 with the Big Band Night and American country legend Robert Mizell. The Classic Oyster Gala, commencing at 4.30pm on Saturday includes a spectacular line up featuring TG4’s Daithi O Se as host and the Sabor Cubano Salsa band, Joe Furey and The Hayride, Julie Feeney, La Bamba, Fuaim Chonamara dance act and the Carouse Band.

Also included are brush dance, oyster eating competitions and novelty surprises. In between the music, entertainment and celebrations sample and savour the native Clarenbridge oysters. Throughout the day there will be unlimited access to a varied menu which includes seafood chowder and sumptuous seafood buffet and there will be a hot supper in the evening. Admission for this event is by pre purchased tickets only.

To complete the festivities the Sunday Jamboree is, as always, a fantastic family day. This will include the town land tug of war, penalty shoot outs, and a children’s disco followed by music from Streetwise.

With fancy dress and art competitions and celebrity guests this will not disappoint. To cater for all, a full carvery lunch and a wide selection of freshly prepared food and a childrens’ menu will also be available on the day.

Anne Forde, Festival Chairperson announced she is delighted that the festival is confirmed as official stopover host for the 2010 Cannon Ball Run.

“Visiting the Clarenbridge Oyster Festival for the second time, this will add to the energy, glamour and excitement of the Classic Oyster Gala,” she said. “As numbers are again limited for the festival events, early booking is essential to avoid disappointment”. Each year more than five thousand people attend the festival over the weekend and indications are that this year will be no exception.
