Abú Media’s historical documentary series Mobs Mheiriceá, which was broadcast on TG4, beat off international competition to take the Factual Series award at the Celtic Media Festival 2010.
The awards were held in Newry, Co Down, last week, with entries coming from Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Mobs Mheiriceá charts the rise and fall of the Irish Mob in the USA over the last century. The winning programme chronicles the life of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, one of the most revered and most vilified Irish American mobsters of all time who still remains on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List.
The series was produced by Eileen and Brid Seoighe, executive produced by Pierce Boyce, and directed by Dathaí Keane from Abú Media for TG4. It was filmed in various cities across the US and Ireland.
“The Celtic Media Festival is one of the most prestigious and long established festivals in these islands and to win such an award is a great achievement for both Abú Media and TG4,” said Eileen Seoighe.
A follow on series from Mobs Mheiriceá will go into production in the autumn. Mobs Canada tells the stories of six Irish-Canadian mobsters and will be broadcast on TG4 early 2011.
