Ó Brolcháin welcomes funding to tackle city’s litter problem

More than €100,000 funding has been provided to tackle litter blackspots in Galway city and county during the peak tourist season of May to September.

Galway city and county have received a total of €40,000 under the anti-litter support grant scheme and a total of €68,000 under the anti-litter and anti-graffiti awareness scheme.

The funding has been welcomed by Green senator Niall Ó Brolcháin.

“It is vital that we show our city and county in the best light for both tourists and potential investors,” he said, “and the money will be set aside to support the cleaning of key scenic, rural, and visitor areas.”

However he said that despite the funding, everyone has “an individual responsibility to keep our streets clean” and the awareness grant is designed to heighten public education in this regard.

This grant covers measures to raise public awareness and promote anti-litter and anti-graffiti activity at local level such as local media campaigns, community clean-ups, school competitions, and has a particular focus on young people and voluntary initiatives.
