Fidelma Healy-Eames launches Facebook site for public protest

A Facebook campaign, aimed at gauging public support for a national day of protest against the Government, has been launched by Fine Gael senator Fidelma Healy Eames.

The Oranmore based senator said she has been contacted by a number of constituents asking that Fine Gael stage a national day of protest.

“The protest would enable people to express their frustration and discontent with the way we’re being governed,” she said, “in particular with the way our resources are being directed one way only - to the banks while hundreds of thousands of people’s futures are destroyed.”

Sen Healy Eames admitted to being “reluctant” to call a national day of protest given “the current state of the economy and the interruption it would cause to people’s daily lives”. However she has set up the Facebook campaign, entitled May Day! May Day! Call for Action, in a bid to gauge public opinion on the matter.

“If the page accumulates 10,000 supporters by May 1, I will pursue with further action,” she said. “I am urging all interested parties to log onto my Facebook page and register their support and feelings in relation to this campaign.”
