The iconic Advertiser in the 70’s image that appeared on the front cover of last week’s Souvenier magazine featured the legs of local woman Bernie Stakem.
The publication of the picture was as much a surprise to Bernie as it was to her friends and family, all of whom instantly recognised her, despite having never seen the picture before.
The picture was originally taken in 1972 for promotional purposes, and was used on a ratecard that was distributed to city businesses.
The picture has never appeared in the paper, and it has taken 38 years for Bernie to receive compliments for her picture perfect pins.
“I was pleasantly surprised, I wasn’t expecting it at all”, said Bernie, “A few from O’Gormans have rung me, and everyone seems to have recognised me straight away, it’s brought back great memories”.
Bernie worked in O’Gormans before the Advertiser was launched, “it was a great place to work”, said Bernie. When the paper started the staff at O’Gormans all helped in its production. “Everybody would do a bit of everything, from binding, working on the paper, collating, and deliveries”.
She also worked on delivering the paper for two years, which became part of the working week for staff at O’Gormans.
Bernie recalls her time working at O’Gormans and the Advertiser with great fondness: “There was a big staff at the time, and it was such a wonderful place to work”.
