Dispute with neighbour proves costly

Breaking his neighbour’s windows and door during a dispute earned a Mervue man a €500 fine at Galway District Court this week.

Robert Halpin (53 ), 90 Walter Macken Flats, Mervue, Galway, pleaded guilty to causing €650 worth of damage at 92 Walter Macken Flats on July 8 last.

Inspector Sean Glynn said the accused broke three windows and glass on a door at his neighbour’s apartment. The pair, he said, had a falling out a few weeks beforehand.

Defence solicitor, Valerie Corcoran, said her client had the €650 in court to pay for the damage. She said her client had already been in consultation with Galway City Council about alternative accommodation and he wanted the charge before the court dealt with straight away.

Judge Mary Fahy warned Halpin that he should stay away from his neighbour.

Ms Corcoran said her client was resolving matters with the council at the moment.

Judge Fahy said that as Halpin had paid for the damage and had pleaded to the charge at the first opportunity she would impose a €500 fine.
